Northern Goa
Northern Goa is where Goan tourism first began when the resort of Calangute became a popular haunt for hippies in the sixties.
Although the hippies have gone from Calangute (though not, perhaps from Anjuna), it has become a well-known resort offering great beaches, a tourist market and a great choice of small bars and restaurants.
Next to Calangute is the quieter resort of Candolim which also has a selection of beach shacks and shops and a great choice of eateries while a little further to the north of Calangute is Baga which is also quite lively with plenty of shops and restaurants. Inland from Baga is Arpora, where the hotels back on to paddy fields and a haven for birdlife.
Northern Goa is known as a land of golden beaches, palm trees and wooded hills while churches, temples, shrines and forts tell the area’s colonial history. The area is associated with music, famous Goan cuisine and most of all with the friendly, smiling people.
