Panaji – or Panjim as it is known in English – is the capital of Goa with a population of around 10,000 people. It is also the state’s third largest city.

The city lies on the left bank of the Mandovi river and its architecture has a particularly Portugese feel to it with attractive villas, red-roofed houses and cobbled streets.

The Church Square or Municipal Garden is the heart of Panaji dominated by the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, an attractive POrtugese Baroque building originally constructed in 1541. Other attractions in what is known as the ‘Latin Quarter’ include the sixteenth-century Adilshahi (or Idalcao) Palace), the Menezes Braganza Institute, the Central Library, the Mahalaxmi Temple, the Jama Masjid mosque, the Chapel of St. Sebastian and the Fontainhas.

The Hanuman Mandir at Mala and its annual Jatra in February is a major event and  includes a colourful parade in the streets followed by the Shigmo (xigmo), or Holi. The Narkasur parade on previous night of Dipavali in the city is also very colourful.

Other attractions in Panaji include the 18th June Road (a busy thoroughfare in the heart of town and a shopping area for tourists and locals), the Mala area, Miramar beach and the Kala Academy, a major Goan cultural centre known for its structure built by architect Charles Correa.
